US Government Offers Free Home COVID-19 Tests Amid Rising Hospitalizations

The US government has resumed its program to provide free COVID-19 tests to the public, allowing households to order up to four tests per family via Covidtests.gov. Those without internet access can request tests by calling 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489). These tests, which can be conducted at home, are available regardless of whether individuals exhibit symptoms, with an expiration date extended by the US Food and Drug Administration to ensure their reliability through the end of the year.

Previously, the US government distributed over 755 million free COVID-19 tests to those who requested them but suspended the program in May. Since then, COVID-19 hospitalizations have been on the rise, with weekly admissions now more than triple the numbers reported two months ago.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends individuals take a COVID-19 test if they experience symptoms resembling the virus, such as a sore throat, runny nose, loss of smell or taste, or fever. Additionally, testing is advised before participating in large events, like concerts or conferences, especially for those not up-to-date on their vaccinations.

People should also test at least five days after close contact with a COVID-19-positive individual, even if they remain asymptomatic. Those who receive a negative result are encouraged to test again 48 hours later.

The Biden administration pledges to continue making free tests available to uninsured individuals through various community outreach programs. For information on locating these programs, individuals can visit HRSA health centers, the Test to Treat site, or ICATT locations online.

This renewed testing program coincides with the Biden administration’s efforts to increase awareness and vaccination rates for flu, RSV, and COVID-19, especially among high-risk groups such as seniors and young children.
