South Korea Leads the Way in EV Infrastructure Development

The development of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure is a pivotal factor driving the global transition toward electric mobility. Public charging stations are the backbone of the EV ecosystem, alleviating range anxiety and ensuring convenient access to charging for EV owners, especially those without home charging facilities or frequently on the move.

As per data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), there were a staggering 2.7 million public charging points worldwide at the end of last year, with over 900,000 added in 2022 alone. Despite the prevalence of home charging, public charging infrastructure remains a crucial catalyst for EV adoption, particularly in densely populated urban areas where home charging options are limited.

While China has made significant strides by adding over a million public charging stations since 2019, it’s South Korea that stands out as the leader in terms of public charging stations per 1,000 plug-in electric vehicles. According to IEA data, South Korea boasted 201,000 public chargers supporting 357,000 plug-in electric passenger cars by the end of 2022, resulting in a remarkable density of 563 charging stations per electric car. This figure surpasses the density found in any of the world’s largest EV markets.

China, with a staggering 1.76 million charging points, accounts for nearly two-thirds of the world’s public charging infrastructure. However, due to its extensive electric vehicle fleet, the country ranks third in terms of chargers per EV on the road. The Netherlands secures the second position in this aspect, boasting 235 public chargers for every 1,000 electric cars.

South Korea’s exemplary commitment to expanding its EV charging infrastructure serves as a testament to its dedication to advancing electric mobility and reducing carbon emissions. This leadership sets a valuable example for nations worldwide striving to promote sustainable transportation solutions.
